Lane College freshman Lonita McClellan-Dickerson, a business major with a minor in music, is making a powerful mark on the West Tennessee arts community through her portrayal of Lucille Bridges in the stage production Look Forward: The Ruby Bridges Story. The production will run February 11–15 at the Ned R. McWherter West TN Cultural Arts Center in Jackson, TN, bringing to life the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering family strength behind one of the most defining moments in American Civil Rights history.

For McClellan-Dickerson, the role is more than a performance, it is a meaningful opportunity to honor legacy, culture, and history during Black History Month.
“Portraying Lucille Bridges is both an honor and a responsibility. As a Lane College student and performer in Jackson, I am grateful to use my gifts to tell a story that reflects the resilience and sacrifice of those who paved the way for generations. Performing this role during Black History Month makes it even more meaningful, as it reminds us that the freedoms and opportunities we experience today were earned through courage, faith, and perseverance. I hope my performance not only honors their legacy but inspires others to continue walking boldly in the paths they create.”
McClellan Dickerson is a standout member of the Lane College Final Authority Ensemble, where her vocal excellence and stage presence continue to develop. Though only in her first year, she has already built an impressive performance portfolio throughout the region.
Her theatrical credits include performing with the Jackson Theatre Guild’s production of Sister Act as one of Delores’ background singers. At The Ned, she previously portrayed Deena Jones in Dreamgirls and served as Vocal Coach for The Color Purple. She has also performed alongside recording artist LOLO in the LOLO Christmas Show benefiting RIFA and provided backup vocals for Drake White at the Grand Ole Opry, and various other performances.
Beyond the stage, McClellan Dickerson demonstrates a deep commitment to service and leadership through the arts. She serves as Youth Choir Director at Historic First Baptist Church, mentoring and developing the next generation of vocalists. Her casting as Lucille Bridges represents a significant milestone in her artistic journey, merging performance with purpose.
“Students who demonstrate this level of commitment to their craft and actively challenge themselves are the very individuals we aim to develop into leaders at Lane,” said Karen Henning, Division of Liberal Studies Chair and Assistant Professor of Music. “We are proud to support the many experiential learning opportunities our students have to excel, grow, and exceed their own potentials.”
Lane College remains committed to cultivating the next generation of leaders through experiential learning, ensuring students gain hands-on opportunities that extend classroom knowledge into real-world impact. McClellan-Dickerson’s continued artistic achievements exemplify the institution’s dedication to developing well-rounded scholars.
The College proudly celebrates Lonita McClellan-Dickerson as she delivers what promises to be a powerful and heartfelt performance in this production
